DESTINIES - THE VOICE OF SCIENCE FICTION
airs on Fridays at 11:30 PM on WUSB, 90.1 FM, the radio station of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Hundreds of writers, artists, editors, actors, producers, directors, and musicians have appeared on the program since its debut in April, 1983. December 31, 2021 The Destinies Musical Theater presents a memorial for composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim featuring the complete score from his Tony Award-winning “Into the Woods.” You'll hear Best Actress Joanna Gleason starring as the Baker's Wife, the legendary Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Chip Zien (the voice of Howard the Duck) as the Baker, and Automan star Chuck Wagner as one of the princes. And you can follow the story as host Howard Margolin reads the plot synopsis to introduce each musical selection.

December 24, 2021 The late Edward Asner reads Robert L. May's original story of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," written in 1939. The Christmas festivities continue, as Patrick Thomas' "Dear Cthulhu" answers a letter from a grifter who poses as Santa Claus. And, in memory of actress Sally Ann Howes, who died on December 19th at the age of 91, you'll hear songs she performed as Truly Scrumptious in the 1968 movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

  

December 17, 2021 The Destinies Film Review Team (Howard Margolin, Dave Campfield, and WUSB DJ Scotty O) assembles live to discuss "Spider-Man: No Way Home," in an extra-length show. Will the world be made to forget the revelation of Peter Parker's secret identity? How does Dr. Strange's spell crack open the multiverse? Will fans get to see three different movie Spider-Men interact, and will it be satisfying to fans of each? And, what is the film worth on the famous Destinies zero-to-nine dollars rating scale?



December 10, 2021 In a Destinies Radio Theater Double Feature, "Spidey Meets Mr. Measles" in a Spidey Super Story narrated by Morgan Freeman, to prepare for the opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home. And, saluting the 50th anniversary of Disney's "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," you'll hear the story and songs from the film. The Destinies Soundtrack Spotlight shines on Danny Elfman's score for Spider-Man 2. Plus, Christina M. Rau reads her poem about the theories of Nikola Tesla, "Turning Motion into Motion."

  

December 3, 2021 Author Patrick Thomas makes his 12th live phone appearance, to discuss three of his recent anthologies. Ranging from Urban Fantasy to Sword and Sorcery, with a generous helping of humor, the titles include The Mug Life (the first Murphy's Lore After Hours collection since 2008), Terrorbelle the Unconquered (featuring stories of the half-pixie, half-ogre in the world of Faerie), and Mean Streets (A Mystic Investigators Book). You'll hear an excerpt from the Murphy's Lore story "Short Fuse," read by the author himself, and a dramatic reading from "Hook, Line, and Sinker," a mermaid murder mystery, performed by Patrick and Howard Margolin. Plus, "Dear Cthulhu" makes an impromptu appearance to speak about the importance of pledging during Radiothon.

  

November 26, 2021 Ghostbusters: Afterlife revived the original franchise's continuity for the first time in 32 years. But, when it comes to an honest, in-depth analysis of the film with the long-time fan's perspective, "Who you gonna call?" The Destinies Film Review Team (Howard Margolin, Audrey Dettmering, and Timothy Gillespie, with proxy commentary by Dave Campfield), which assembled live to discuss the movie. Is the film a worthwhile successor to the original? Does the new kid-centered team compare to the 1980's group of comedy legends? Is the movie even a comedy? And, what is it worth on the famous Destinies zero to nine dollars rating scale?



November 19, 2021 L.I. Who showrunner Ken Deep describes the guests and programming highlights for the Doctor Who convention Timeflight: 2021. Christopher DeFilippis remembers the late actor Dean Stockwell in Volume 2, Number 205 of "DeFlip Side" and introduces Stockwell performing "Alphabet Song Rap" from the soundtrack of “Quantum Leap.” Patrick Thomas' "Dear Cthulhu" answers a letter from a man whose girlfriend is addicted to nitrous oxide. Christina M. Rau reads her poem "Space Junk." Colleen Bement previews upcoming movies in this month's "Nerd Alert News." And to mark the release of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the Destinies Radio Theater presents an adaptation of the original “Ghostbusters.”

October 29, 2021 39th Annual Halloween Special. In the latest installment of The Voice of Science Fiction's longest-running annual tradition, the Destinies Radio Theater takes you back 82 years, to experience "The Phantom Fingerprints," as originally aired on the October 29th, 1939 episode of "The Shadow." In a story based on an actual police procedure for obtaining fingerprints from decomposed bodies, fingerprints indicate that the murder of the city's veteran medical examiner is the work of Killer Norvelli, a former circus knife thrower who was executed eight years before. Is Norvelli back from the dead, or will the Shadow uncover another killer at work? And, will Lamont Cranston be able to convince Commissioner Weston to come to the rehearsal of his new mystery play? Also, host Howard Margolin remembers the late actress JoAnna Cameron and tells you about the newest horror releases from Alpha Video.



October 22, 2021 The Voice of Science Fiction celebrates the 50th anniversary of The Electric Company, when Spidey Meets the Jester in "The Last Laugh" from the 1977 LP "Spidey Super Stories," narrated by Morgan Freeman. Plus, you'll hear songs written and performed by the legendary musical satirist Tom Lehrer for The Electric Company, including his takes on "S-N," "O-U", "L-Y," and "N Apostrophe T." In the second act of a Destinies Radio Theater Double Feature, the Destinies Archives open for "Dune Part 1: Battle for the Known Universe." Plus, Colleen Bement returns with an all-Star Trek edition of "Nerd Alert News," and Rorie Kelly recites Data's "Ode to Spot" from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

  

October 15, 2021 "Graphic Detail" # 232: In memory of writer, artist, and publisher Clifford Van Meter (12/26/56-11/16/18), a digitally-edited encore of his 10/11/96 live, in-studio interview at WUSB, where he discussed his comic book "Silver" and his company, Comicolor. Then, in the second half of this hour-long broadcast, Marc Gunn concludes his 3/28/2010 concert at I-Con 29, performing such audience-participation favorites as "St. Patrick Never Drank," "Kilted for Her Pleasure," and "Old Dun Cow."



October 8, 2021 Saluting the release of “No Time To Die,” by shining the Destinies Soundtrack Spotlight on John Barry's score for the 1974 James Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun." Plus, the Destinies Radio Theater takes 007 into space with an adaptation of "Moonraker." Patrick Thomas' "Dear Cthulhu" answers a letter from an old man who lost his wife. Christina M. Rau reads her poem "All The Years They Didn't," inspired by the 2016 movie “Passengers.” And in the second half of this expanded show, travel back to 2010 as Marc Gunn performs Part I of his Celtic Comedy Concert at I-Con 29.



October 1, 2021 Destinies salutes the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and joins in the celebration of World College Radio Day, with an expanded show, featuring syndicated interviews with legendary comedy DJ Dr. Demento, and World College Radio Day ambassador "Weird Al" Yankovic, who got his start on college radio, more than 40 years ago. In addition, to mark the debut of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the Destinies Soundtrack Spotlight shines on Ludwig Goransson's score for 2018's Venom. And, learn more about the serial killer Cletus Kasady, in chapter 2 of Spider-Man: Carnage in New York, read by Tim Paige, on the Destinies Audiobook Sampler.

  

September 24, 2021 An extra-length show, featuring Tim Paige relating the origins of Spider-Man, Venom, and Carnage from David Michelinie and Dean Wesley Smith's novel Spider-Man: Carnage in New York as the Destinies Audiobook Sampler prepares for the release of "Venom: Let There Be Carnage." Colleen Bement presents the latest updates on movies, television, streaming, and conventions in this month's "Nerd Alert News." September 10, 2021 The Destinies Film Review Avengers (Howard Margolin, Audrey Dettmering, Dave Campfield, and Timothy Gillespie) assemble live to discuss “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” How does the movie fit in to the 13-year old Marvel Cinematic Universe? September 3, 2021 An extra-length show featuring an encore of The Archstone Players' performance of "The Black Cat," in memory of director Mary Aversano (4/16/35-4/8/20). Celebrating the 55th anniversary of "Star Trek," the Destinies Audiobook Sampler presents William Shatner’s reflections on its place in pop culture in an excerpt from his autobiography, “Up Till Now.” Nichelle Nichols sings her version of the "Theme from Star Trek" and remembers the centennial of creator Gene Roddenberry with her song "Gene." And the Destinies Radio Theater marks the opening of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” with an adaptation of “Iron Man 3,” including dialogue, music, and effects from the original film soundtrack.

"Speed Racer's" Peter Fernandez reads "Masters of the Universe: Castle Grayskull" in a special presentation of the Destinies Audiobook Sampler. Saluting the release of "Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins," the Destinies Radio Theater goes back to 1973 for "G.I. Joe: The Secret of the Mummy's Tomb." In memory of composer/producer Jim Steinman, Taylor Dane sings "Original Sin" from the soundtrack of “The Shadow” and Marc Anthony and Tina Arena perform "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" from “The Mask of Zorro.” Christina M. June 4, 2021 Continuing the memorial for author Margaret Wander Bonanno with part one of her novel Star Trek: Probe on the Destinies Audiobook Sampler. James Doohan reads this story, which picks up where Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home left off, with the crew of the USS Enterprise again facing the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Earth.
Speaking of destroyed Earths, as the world comes to a fiery end in the year 3955, chimpanzee scientists Cornelius and Zira board Taylor's space ship, and "Escape From the Planet of the Apes." May 28, 2021 Honoring the memory of author Margaret Wander Bonanno (2/7/50-4/8/21) with an encore of an interview with her and fellow "Star Trek" author Carmen Carter, recorded at Creation Convention, and originally aired on 8/25/89. Remembering actor Samuel E. Wright (11/20/46-5/24/21) with his performances of "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl" from the soundtrack of "The Little Mermaid."

  

May 21, 2021 The memorial for Herbert F. Solow, the executive in charge of production for Star Trek, who died on 11/19/20 at age 89, continues with his and Robert H. Justman's reading of part 2 of their memoir Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, on the Destinies Audiobook Sampler. Celebrate the belated 45th anniversary of the NBC series Gemini Man, which debuted on 5/10/76, with the invisible secret agent Sam Casey traveling to Europe to uncover the secret of "The Phloem Factor" on the Destinies Radio Theater. Plus, Christina M. Rau reads her poem "Reliance on Mercury."

  

May 14, 2021 Remembering Herbert F. Solow (12/14/30-11/19/20) with part one of his and Robert H. Justman's reading of "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story" on the Destinies Audiobook Sampler. In memory of actress Billie Hayes (8/5/24-4/29/21), she performs, in her signature role of Witchiepoo, songs from the "H.R. Pufnstuf" soundtrack. May 7, 2021 The Voice of Science Fiction begins its 39th year by returning to those thrilling days of yesteryear to relive an episode of "The Lone Ranger" that originally aired on May 7, 1952. In this Destinies Radio Theater 69-year slipback, an ex-convict reaches "The Turning Point," when he plans revenge on the man who sent him to prison and brought about his father's execution: the Lone Ranger!



April 30, 2021 Destinies celebrates its 38th anniversary with an extra-length special, featuring some of the best material from the past year, as well as some all-new features. Encore readings include "Susan" by Harlan Ellison, "The Bag Lady" by David Gerrold, and excerpts from "The Other Car" by Paul Levinson, and "DAR & Earth: Revelations" by Athena M. Kaiman. Plus, previously-unaired music from Paul Levinson, Kent Hernandez, Pepe, and Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts' score for Chaos Walking; a new poem by Christina M. March 19, 2021 Saluting the debut of "Zack Snyder's Justice League" with the full-length Destinies Radio Theater adventure, "Super Powers: Darkseid...of the Moon," written by DC Comics' Andrew Helfer. When astronauts on the moon uncover the Tower of Darkness, secret base of the New God Darkseid and his minions Steppenwolf and Mantis, the astronauts are captured and the Super Powers Team are called to rescue them. Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, Red Tornado, Firestorm, and Doctor Fate must battle the energy vampire Mantis even as the moon is being blasted out of Earth's orbit. Will the heroes triumph?



March 12, 2021 "Graphic Detail" # 231: Howard Margolin celebrates his 37th anniversary with the Voice of Science Fiction by speaking with Glenn Greenberg, who returns for his record-breaking 29th appearance to discuss his Back Issue #126 article "Green Genes," tracing the legacy of the Green Goblin, as well as the "Star Trek 55th Anniversary" Bookazine, which he wrote.

  

March 5, 2021 The Destinies Audiobook Sampler honors the memory of pilot Chuck Yeager, the first man to break the sound barrier, who recounts his experiences in Europe during World War II in Part 2 of “Yeager.” Christopher DeFilippis returns after 9 months to discuss his re-watch of “Star Trek: Enterprise” in Volume 2, Number 203 of "DeFlip Side." Plus, the Destinies Soundtrack Spotlight shines on the music from “Star Trek: Enterprise.”

  

February 26, 2021 The Destinies Audiobook Sampler honors American hero General Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound, who died on December 7, 2020 at the age of 97, with Part 1 of “Yeager.” The celebrated general tells his own story in his own voice, including how he learned to fly, and how he met his wife, Glennis. February 19, 2021 The Destinies Radio Theater, in honor of the upcoming debut of “Superman and Lois” on the CW, presents "The Punishment of Superboy," starring Speed Racer's Peter Fernandez and narrator Jackson Beck, from the 1966 album "The Official Adventures of Superman." The Destinies Soundtrack Spotlight shines on Jay Gruska's score for “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” Christina M. Rau relates the joys and pains of having super-powers in her poems "Bounding" and "At First.” Plus, Patrick Thomas' "Dear Cthulhu" answers a letter from a woman who wonders if her daughter will become a serial killer.

  



February 12, 2021 Experience a 75-year flashback and travel to the Golden Age of Radio as the Destinies Radio Theater presents "The Man Who Couldn't Die," starring Richard Widmark, as originally aired on the February 12, 1946 episode of "Inner Sanctum Mysteries." Alex Gregory kills his fiancee's father to obtain the secret of eternal life, but his murderous schemes backfire after he finally attains immortality.

January 29, 2021 Remembering actress Mira Furlan (9/7/55-1/20/21) with her songs "I Don't Know Who You Are" and "The Touch of Your Hand," from the 1998 album "Trying to Forget" by The Be Five. In Destinies' 36th annual memorial to the crews of the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, you'll learn how Rick Husband was accepted into NASA's astronaut program in part eleven of High Calling: The Courageous Life and Faith of Space Shuttle Columbia Commander Rick Husband, written and read by Evelyn Husband. Patrick Thomas' "Dear Cthulhu" answers a letter from a woman who wants to introduce her son to the world of swinging. Plus, Christina M. Rau performs her poems "How Do We Determine What Mars Is Made Of?" and "Static."

  

January 22, 2021 The Destinies Radio Theater concludes its salute to the late actress Dame Diana Rigg, who stars as the Teller in "Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology," part 3 of the full-cast dramatization. In this final segment, learn the fates of Fenrir the giant wolf and his father Loki; find out the circumstances behind the death of Balder, and how that led to Ragnarok, the end of everything.

  

January 15, 2021 Continuing the salute to the memory of Dame Diana Rigg, with part two of "Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology" on the Destinies Radio Theater. This full cast dramatization of the tales of the gods of Asgard, stars Diana Rigg as the Teller, who relates the stories of the wall built around Asgard for protection, how Loki and Thor retrieved Thor's hammer from the Lord of the Ogres, and how All-Father Odin dealt with Loki's three illegitimate children.

  

January 8, 2021 Honoring the memory of Dame Diana Rigg, who died at the age of 82 on September 10th, 2020 as she stars as the Teller of "Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology," in part one of a three-part Destinies Radio Theater presentation. A full-cast dramatization of Neil Gaiman's magical retellings of the Norse myths, this BBC Radio 4 production invites you into a world of gods and monsters, tricks and trusts, fiery endings, and new beginnings.

  

January 1, 2021 The Destinies Film Review team (Howard Margolin, Dave Campfield, and Josephine Iannece) assembles live and virtually to discuss the long-awaited release of “Wonder Woman 1984,” which debuted simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. December 25, 2020 The Destinies Radio Theater salutes the release of Wonder Woman 1984 with part two of "Torment in Paradise," based on a 1982 DC Comics story arc by Dan Mishkin. When the Olympian-powered Aegeus attacks Paradise Island, Wonder Woman, Queen Hippolyte, and Steve Trevor team up to defend the island and the Amazons. Dave Campfield returns to review the recently-completed second season of The Mandalorian. And, Devo Spice performs his latest comedy rap song, "Mandalorian."
