DESTINIES - THE VOICE OF SCIENCE FICTION airs on Fridays at 11:30 PM on WUSB, 90.1 FM, the radio station of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Hundreds of writers, artists, editors, actors, producers, directors, and musicians have appeared on the program since its debut in April, 1983. January 3, 1984 Gary Halada presents "Phaedra Part 2" by Tangerine Dream and "Main Sequence" from Vangelis' album "Albedo 0.39." Arthur Dent learns the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything," in the penultimate chapter of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

  

March 13, 1984 Howard Margolin (mispronounced "Margolis") makes his Destinies debut by reading part one of Fritz Leiber's "A Pail of Air." Jefferson Airplane performs "White Rabbit." Learn about composite materials in NASA's "The Space Story." Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian are reunited with Marvin the Paranoid Android in "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." Hosted by Gary Halada, who reviews local bookstores, and Fred Coulter, who provides additional NASA notes.



March 20, 1984 Howard Margolin (uncredited) concludes his reading of Fritz Leiber's "A Pail of Air." "The Space Story" provides an overview of NASA's activities in 1984. Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian, and Marvin find themselves trapped on board Disaster Area's sun-diving stunt-ship after stealing it from "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." Hosted by Mike Botwin.

March 27, 1984 Co-Chairman Ralph Schiano joins hosts Gary Halada and Fred Coulter to preview the guests, films, and events scheduled for I-Con III. NASA explores the commercial applications of experiments conducted on the space shuttle in a chapter of "The Space Story." Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect find themselves aboard the Golgafrincham Ark B in an episode of "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe."

  

April 3, 1984 Destinies' first post-I-Con show featuring Howard Margolin (who also co-hosts for the first time) reviewing the comics track at I-Con III, Landscape performing "Shake the West Awake" and "Computer Person," NASA discussing the Manned Maneuvering Unit in a chapter of "The Space Story," Gary Halada listing the Locus monthly Bestseller List, and the final installment of "Restaurant at the End of the Universe."

April 24, 1984 Destinies' unheralded first anniversary special featuring the first full-length I-Con Retrospective. Fred Coulter, Gary Halada, Ralph Schiano, John Madonia, Kevin Sterner, George Krauter, and Anthony Detres review the high and low points of I-Con III.

May 1, 1984 In a pre-finals horror special, the Alan Parsons Project performs "The Cask of Amontillado," from the album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination." Gary Halada reads "Cool Air," by H.P. Lovecraft. Then, Howard Margolin reads another Lovecraft tale, "The Cats of Ulthar," before introducing Destinies' original tagline

  
May 22, 1984 Howard Margolin hosts his first solo show, with music by Synergy, ELO, Jerry Goldsmith ("Alien"), John Williams ("Close Encounters of the Third Kind"), Alan Parsons Project, Meco, and Vangelis.

  
May 29, 1984 Howard Margolin reads Ralph Roberts' "Future Fable of the Third Wish." Jerry Goldsmith's "Main Title and Overture" from "Twilight Zone: The Movie." Gary Halada discusses "Writer's Market 1984," edited by Bernadine Clark. Synergy performs "Relay Breakdown." On the Destinies Radio Theater, the 4th Doctor battles the dying Pescaton advance scout at the London Zoo, as "Doctor Who and the Pescatons" continues. Mike Oldfield sings "On Horseback."

  
June 5, 1984 Gary Halada dedicates Queen's version of "The Wedding March" from the soundtrack of "Flash Gordon" to Jeff Warner and Lisa Selitzer, then reviews "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock." Tangerine Dream performs "Cinnamon Road." Gerard Piel, publisher of "Scientific American" discusses "Anti-Satellite Weapons." The Fourth Doctor recalls his journey to the planet of Pesca as "Doctor Who and the Pescatons" continues on the Destinies Radio Theater. The Intergalactic Touring Band performs "Approach" and "Silver Lady." Also hosted by Howard Margolin.

  
June 12, 1984 The Moody Blues perform "Om," from their album "In Search of the Lost Chord." Larry Sufrin reviews "Ghostbusters." Music from John Williams' score for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." Gerard Piel discusses the article "The Structure and Evolution of Interstellar Grains," from the June, 1984 issue of "Scientific American," in an edition of "Science and Our Lives." The Fourth Doctor engages in mental battle with Zor, and describes the invasion of Earth in an episode of "Doctor Who and the Pescatons." Howard Margolin introduces "Eve of Destruction," sung by Barry McGuire. Gary Halada previews Dimension Convention.

  
June 19, 1984 ELO performs "Prologue/Twilight" from their album "Time." Gary Halada reviews "Gremlins." Klaatu performs "Silly Boys" from their album "Sir Army Suit." On the Destinies Radio Theater, the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane confront a Pescaton invader in the penultimate episode of "Doctor Who and the Pescatons," starring Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen. Chris De Burgh sings "Don't Pay the Ferryman." Isao Tomita interprets "Also Sprach Zarathustra." Also hosted by Howard Margolin.



June 26, 1984 Gary Halada reports from Dimension Convention in New York City, where he interviews DC Comics Vice-President and Executive Editor Dick Giordano, Dimension's General Manager John Estrin, and a number of Dimension Convention attendees. Howard Margolin introduces the final chapter of "Doctor Who and The Pescatons," starring Tom Baker as the Doctor.



July 3, 1984 Celebrating Independence Day with "The Monument" from Jerry Goldsmith's score for "Logan's Run," Joey Scarbury's "Theme from the Greatest American Hero," and William Daniels performing "Is Anybody There?" from the soundtrack of "1776." Plus, "Prime Time" by the Alan Parsons Project, and Gene Roddenberry discusses "The Origin of Spock" and interviews Mark Lenard in character about "Sarek's Son, Spock" from the album "Inside Star Trek."



July 10, 1984 Gary Halada, Howard Margolin, and Everett Pampellone discuss their favorite and least favorite science fiction television series, and the high and low points of the history of the genre on television.

  
July 17, 1984 Gary Halada reads "Double Standard" by Fredric R. Brown. Episode 1 of "Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks" starring Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen. Plus, music from Tangerine Dream's score for "Firestarter," and the Intergalactic Touring Band.



July 24, 1984 Howard Margolin reads Jim Steranko's "Exile at the Edge of Eternity" from Superman # 400. NASA celebrates the 15th anniversary of Apollo 11 in "The Space Story." On the Destinies Radio Theater, Sarah Jane Smith is captured by the Thals, while the Doctor and Harry encounter a prototype Dalek in part 2 of "Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks."



July 31, 1984 Gary Halada reviews "The Computer Connection" by Alfred Bester, then joins Howard Margolin to introduce episode three of "Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks." Plus, music by Vangelis from the soundtrack of "Chariots of Fire" in honor of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.



August 7, 1984 Gene Roddenberry describes "The Questor Affair" on the album "Inside Star Trek." Gary Halada and Howard Margolin discuss their upcoming vacations in time and space. Gary sets up The Intergalactic Touring Band's "Starship Jingle," and talks about upcoming conventions. NASA details their plans for a Space Station in a chapter of "The Space Story." Howard introduces episode 4 of "Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks."

  

August 14, 1984 Gary Halada and Howard Margolin speak with DC Comics' associate editor Bob Greenberger in part 1 of a 2-part telephone interview. Bob discusses his work at DC, including such projects as "Crisis on Infinite Earths," "Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe," "Camelot 3000," "The New Teen Titans," "Atari Force," and "Legion of Super-Heroes." Then, Gary introduces episode 5 of the Destinies Radio Theater serialization of "Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks," and reads a letter by Science Fiction Forum member Stefan Jones from the Destinies mailbag.

  

August 21, 1984 Gary Halada and Howard Margolin conclude their telephone interview with DC Comics' Associate Editor Bob Greenberger, who discusses plans for the "Star Trek" and "V" comic books, his experiences at I-Con, and the book "Trivia Mania: Comics and Cartoons" that he wrote under the house pseudonym of Xavier Einstein. Gary introduces episode 6 of the Destinies Radio Theater serialization of "Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks."

September 11, 1984 The Destinies Film Review Team (Joe Leo and Kevin Sterner) discusses "Conan The Destroyer" and "C.H.U.D." then, joined by Howard Margolin, takes on "The Last Starfighter." Blue Oyster Cult performs "Veteran of the Psychic Wars." Gary Halada and Clifford Hong continue their interview with "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine" editor-in-chief Shawna McCarthy and associate editor Sheila Williams. Joe Leo dispenses advice in "Dear Destinies."



September 18, 1984 John Madonia reviews "The Philadelphia Experiment." Howard Margolin and Joe Leo review the Marvel Graphic Novel "Dazzler-The Movie." Gary Halada and Clifford Hong continue their interview with "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine" Editor-In-Chief Shawna McCarthy and Associate Editor Sheila Williams.

  

October 9, 1984 John Peel, editor of "Fantasy Empire," becomes Destinies' first in-studio guest as he joins Howard Margolin, Ralph Schiano, John Madonia, and Joe Leo, to preview Peter Davison's term as the Fifth Doctor, prior to the start of his "Doctor Who" episodes airing on Long Island public television for the first time. Includes excerpts from "The Five Doctors" and "The Caves of Androzani."



October 16, 1984 John Peel, editor of "Fantasy Empire," returns to the WUSB studio for his 2nd appearance to provide a look at the history of "Doctor Who," and introduce excerpts from "The Daleks," "The Aztecs," "The War Games," and "Terror of the Autons."

  
October 23, 1984 John Madonia previews upcoming films, books, and television in "Things To Come," then joins with Howard Margolin, Ralph Schiano, and Joe Leo to review "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai." The Destinies Radio Theater presents chapter one of The Amazing Spider-Man in "From Beyond the Grave," starring Rene Auberjonois as Peter Parker. Plus, music from "2001: A Space Odyssey."

  

October 30,1984 In Destinies' 2nd Halloween special, Ralph Schiano reads Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," Howard Margolin reads "Spring-Fingered Jack" by Susan Casper , and John Madonia reads Al Sarrantonio's "Pumpkinhead." Also hosted by Gary Halada.​

November 6, 1984 Gary Halada introduces Mike Oldfield's "Punkadiddle" and Roger Powell's "Air Pocket." John Madonia previews films, television, and literature in "Things to Come." Howard Margolin introduces Gene Roddenberry's "A Letter From A Network Censor" from the album "Inside Star Trek," and Episode 2 of The Amazing Spider-Man in "From Beyond the Grave."



November 13, 1984 John Madonia previews films, television, and books in "Things to Come." Ralph Schiano provides an I-Con IV update, then teams with John and Joe Leo to review "The Terminator," "Terror in the Aisles," and "A Nightmare on Elm Street." Howard Margolin introduces Part 3 of The Amazing Spider-Man in "From Beyond the Grave" on the Destinies Radio Theater. John Farnham's "End Titles" from "Savage Street." Also hosted by Gary Halada.



November 20, 1984 John Madonia discusses upcoming films and television series in "Things to Come," then joins with Ralph Schiano to review "Brother From Another Planet" and "Silent Night, Deadly Night." Gary ("TOG") McCammon reads Stanislaw Lem's "How the World was Saved." Howard Margolin introduces part 4 of "The Amazing Spider-Man in From Beyond the Grave." Also hosted by Gary Halada.



November 27, 1984 A digitally-re-edited pre-recorded interview with author Frank Herbert and screenwriter/director David Lynch about the making of the movie "Dune." The Amazing Spider-Man receives help from a "Strange Ally" in part 5 of "From Beyond the Grave" on the Destinies Radio Theater. Plus, music from the Intergalactic Touring Band and the soundtrack of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."



December 4, 1984 John Madonia discusses "Things to Come" in books, films, and television, then joins with Howard Margolin, Ralph Schiano, and Gary Halada to review "Supergirl," "The Ewok Adventure," "Night of the Comet," and "Repo Man." On the Destinies Radio Theater, Spider-Man and Dr. Strange battle the Kingpin and his henchmen to rescue Aunt May in the concluding episode of "From Beyond the Grave," starring Rene Auberjonois as Peter Parker.



December 11, 1984 Howard Margolin introduces selections from the soundtrack of "Dune." John Madonia previews upcoming films, television, and books in "Things To Come," then teams with Ralph Schiano to review "2010" and "Starman."

December 18, 1984 John Madonia previews upcoming films and books and reviews "V: The Series" in "Things to Come." Ralph Schiano reviews Robert A. Heinlein's "Job: A Comedy of Justice." Howard Margolin reads "Statues of the Gods" by Tom von McDoniken. Ralph and John join with George Krauter to review David Lynch's "Dune."

 



December 25th, 1984 Destinies' first Christmas Special, featuring a trio of short stories. Ralph Schiano reads "The Star" by Arthur C. Clarke. Howard Margolin reads David A. Kyle's "Toys For Debbie." John Madonia reads "The Gift" by Ray Bradbury.
